I seem to be busy with ordinary things--getting the car inspected, etc. I am looking forward to tomorrow when I can paint.

Still Life with Strawberries
I'm back from my holiday journeys to see friends and family. It was a wonderful time, but I glad to be home and painting today. It's raining, so I cannot take a photo and post. The above painting is in my house.
I saw the Chinese terra cotta soldiers at the High Museum in Atlanta. If you live anywhere near I recommend you visit it. These were made around 200 BC, and clay methods are still very much the same. It is one of the most remarkable shows I've seen. I have always had a fascination with China and now know that I will probably never go there. We are, indeed, fortunate that it is now in the US.

I just finished reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, also author of Blink and The Tipping Point. It deals with the complex story of success--not what you think according to Gladwell. What I found the most interesting as an artist is the 10,000 hour rule. He cites several studies that point to practice with the intention of improving as the best avenue for mastering a skill. The magic number tends to be about 10,000 hours. What do you think?

Last Saturday I participated in a Paint Out, organized by Scott Boyles, at the Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina. We all gathered at the Living History area, and I chose the vegetable garden with scarecrow area. A great bunch of artists, great work, and great fun!

New Brushes? What kind?
I am shopping for new brushes. They all seem great when I buy them, but quickly decline. I like a filbert with a knife like edge for making thin lines. Do any of you artists out there have some recommendations?What's Wrong with this Picture?

The Dee Beard Dean workshop was outstanding. It was just a delight to watch her choose a location, mix colors, and paint. She could take the most unpromising scene and make a wonderful painting. It was a productive time for me--I painted 7 paintings. The painting above was painted on the 3rd day.

Kitchen Art and Painting Workshop
This still life in is my kitchen, under the cabinets on the wall. I know there is a name for this area, but my beleaguered brain will just not give it up today.I'm off to a painting workshop in Greensboro, NC, with Dee Beard Dean. Dee is a terrific artist, a great teacher, and an all around nice person. Just think, this time next week I will be a better painter.
