The little window with the blue trim was made up to make that part of the painting more interesting However, I have seen enough of these type buildings to know it would have been perfectly at home in this setting.

To mark my year (plus a few months) of selling on the internet, I shall be giving away the painting above. The drawing will be Friday night, August 1. Dancing Rabbit Creek, number 2 (sold)

8x10, oil on canvas panel

95.00, includes domestic shipping

The Noxubee River in Mississippi is the Indian name for Dancing Rabbit Creek. I painted a slightly different angle a few weeks ago and had a huge response to it, so I decided to paint another as I often do with favorite locations. No two paintings look alike--I would make a terrible forger

French Garden behind the Wall

12x12, oil on canvas panel
220.00, includes domestic shipping
This is a larger format than I usually offer on my blog. Framed with a wide plein air frame will make this piece a substantial work of art for your home. This is painted from a photograph. I spent several weeks in France a few years ago...everything seemed paintable!

Connie Winters Painting Workshop, part 3

This is the last installment of Connie Winter's painting workshop, although she did a wonderful demonstration each morning for 5 days. The pic about represents the final finishing stage although she will work on it more at another time. After massing in all the areas, she takes a small sable brush and redraws in order to refine the shapes, correct any drawing errors, and to add detail. Lately she has been leaving some of the redrawn lines in the finished picture, although she eliminates most or softens them.
Tomorrow I will begin posting my own work again. Toward the end of the week I'll post the painting that will be given away in a drawing of names.

Connie Winters Painting Workshop, continued

Pictured above is Connie's paint set up...quite innovative! A large piece of glass sits on a compartmentalized box which holds her tubes of paint. It's on a hinge, so she does not have to move the glass to get to her paints. To the left is attached a wood board with drilled holes for brushes and knives. Someone in the workshop mentioned that one could be made from an old dresser drawer.

This is the step she calls massing in. Fairly thin paint is applied with cross hatching strokes, painting out side the drawn lines so that the colors overlap somewhat. There is no attempt at detail.

Tomorrow I'll post the next steps.

Later next week I'll be posting a FREE painting that will be given away to someone who puts their name on the list. Stay tuned!

Connie Winters Painting Workshop

Today I began a 5 day painting workshop with Connie Winters who is an awesome painter and a charming, gracious person. I thought you might like to see what happened today. Beginning a 9:00, Connie did a demonstration painting. She begin with a charcoal sketch just for placement and size, no details, wiped off most of the dust so that only a faint outline appeared, and then drew again (redrawing and refining, not just tracing over the charcoal) with yellow ochre. In the above picture she has finished these steps and is now putting on a thin coat of paint, beginning with the darkest values.
The top picture shows the still life set up. Notice that she used two spotlights on the subject to get a strong value contrast.
Will post more on workshop later.
