Afternoon Grazing, Union County, NC

5x7, oil on canvas panel
Cows are so funny. Before I could finish the cows dotted around the pasture, they all came to the fence, all facing the same way, all looking at me painting.

Spring in Union County, NC

8x10, oil on canvas panel

The little yellow spring flowers made an almost perfect Z in the pasture. I thought that might look a somewhat contrived, so I softened the shape. It was a beautiful day for painting--warm, gentle breeze, no humidity

Beginning a Painting

I have no finished painting to post today, so I am posting three paintings in various stages of "unfinishedment". It's interesting to see the progress of a painting. Sometimes I love the beginning much better than the finish.

On the landscape, you can see new lines drawn to correct some shapes. They will not show in the finished painting.

This one just need a little tweaking, plus adding the pile of logs in front and adding the gate. You can currently see the shadow of the gate on the red shed.

The painting above, an antique shop interior, is drawn and somewhat blocked in. Everything is extremely loose and experimental at the beginning.

Working the Field

9x11, oil on masonite

This painting has been varnished, hence the strange color of the hedgerow behind the farm equipment. I have not yet figured out how to advoid the glare of varnish.

I will be out of town through next Tuesday. Please check back then for a new posting.

Four Studies

5x7, oil on canvas panel
These 4 studies were done over the weekend as warm ups for plein air painting. We had a beautiful day, and it was delightful to be outside to paint. Each painting is $20 plus 3.00 for shipping. They are small, but would have real significance if framed with a wide frame. Frames make all the difference in the world! If you are interested in all four, please make an offer.

The second one from the top has been sold.

The Bridge at the Duck Pond

8x10, oil on canvas panel

I painted this last Saturday at Freedom Park in Charlotte in a Paint Out organized by Scott Boyle. There were probably about 25 people there sketching or painting. It's fun to paint with a group and see the different interpretations of some of the same subject matter.

Dancing Pears

11x14, oil on board

The background of this painting is black. It did not photograph well because I had varnished it. Note to self: Always take photo BEFORE varnishing.
