I shall be leaving tomorrow for 3 plus weeks, so posting will be somewhat spotty.
I am taking my paints with me, but I will be keeping the grandchildren, 6 and 4, and we all know these two do not always mix well! Please check back. I have several started that I know I'll finish and post. Thank you for visiting my painting blog.

Raku Pottery, Andy Smith, North Carolina

Today was a hectic day for me, and I did not finish my painting for the blog. So-0-0 I am taking you to the pottery exhibit I attended two Saturdays ago. The work is done by Andy Smith, nationally recognized potter, who lives in a rural area of Marshville, NC. I have a wonderful collection of his work and treasure each one.
Look carefully at this one in order to see the design. His surface design, it seems to me, reflect influences of Frank Lloyd Wright, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau.

His pot silhouettes are classic, beautiful shapes. You will notice a unifying black on each of them. This is the raku procedure in action. Pots are first bisque fired, then glazed, refired to a high temperature in about 45 minutes, removed red hot from the kiln with tongs, and plunged into a barrel of leaves, etc. Of course the leaves catch on fire and the smoke makes the black areas which are unglazed, and gets into the fine line crackle of the glazed portions. It is quite dramatic! The process originated in Japan, but American potters have modified the procedure somewhat.

Isn't that a gorgeous shape? If you look carefully, you can barely see the fine line crackle.
Have a great day tomorrow and check back for one of my paintings. My thanks to all of you.

The little window with the blue trim was made up to make that part of the painting more interesting However, I have seen enough of these type buildings to know it would have been perfectly at home in this setting.

The Noxubee River in Mississippi is the Indian name for Dancing Rabbit Creek. I painted a slightly different angle a few weeks ago and had a huge response to it, so I decided to paint another as I often do with favorite locations. No two paintings look alike--I would make a terrible forger

Connie Winters Painting Workshop, part 3

This is the last installment of Connie Winter's painting workshop, although she did a wonderful demonstration each morning for 5 days. The pic about represents the final finishing stage although she will work on it more at another time. After massing in all the areas, she takes a small sable brush and redraws in order to refine the shapes, correct any drawing errors, and to add detail. Lately she has been leaving some of the redrawn lines in the finished picture, although she eliminates most or softens them.
Tomorrow I will begin posting my own work again. Toward the end of the week I'll post the painting that will be given away in a drawing of names.

Connie Winters Painting Workshop, continued

Pictured above is Connie's paint set up...quite innovative! A large piece of glass sits on a compartmentalized box which holds her tubes of paint. It's on a hinge, so she does not have to move the glass to get to her paints. To the left is attached a wood board with drilled holes for brushes and knives. Someone in the workshop mentioned that one could be made from an old dresser drawer.

This is the step she calls massing in. Fairly thin paint is applied with cross hatching strokes, painting out side the drawn lines so that the colors overlap somewhat. There is no attempt at detail.

Tomorrow I'll post the next steps.

Later next week I'll be posting a FREE painting that will be given away to someone who puts their name on the list. Stay tuned!
