The complementary colors (red and green) used side by side make the colors more intense. If they are mixed together, they become grayed down and somewhat darker. I love it when I can find a spot to put red, as it relieves all that green in a landscape. Also, I did not use any black in this painting; the blacks were made with viridian (green) ultramarine blue, and aliziren crimson.
