Poetry in Light

Painting a barn is always a fun project.  All look somewhat weathered to me and most look a little
 (or a lot)
rundown.  Most painters agree that a not so beautiful scene will often make the
best painting....although I don't think I can put the reason in words.

I painted this one with my plein air group but also did more work in my studio,  Once I get it away from the subject matter I can be more objective and often see something that I want to "improve."

I am including a photo of the barn from where I was standing.  It's always fun to see
what was really there.

Today's weather was wonderfully warm, allowing the Plein Air Group to meet and paint. Our location was Hunter Farm, a place we've painted before but never tire. I did two paintings this morning without ever moving my easel--that's how much "stuff" there is to paint!

The Leaning Chimney

8x8, oil on canvas panel
95.00, includes shipping

I'm back from keeping my sweet grandchildren...glad to be back in my own routine and in the studio. I had almost finished this painting when I noticed the chimney--I must have been concentrating on other parts of the house. This is another of those abandoned houses that I love so much, located in northeast Mississippi.

Rural Store with Vines

95.00
If you are interested in this painting, please email me. gatlinsnipes@hotmail.com

The little window with the blue trim was made up to make that part of the painting more interesting However, I have seen enough of these type buildings to know it would have been perfectly at home in this setting.

Dancing Rabbit Creek, number 2 (sold)

8x10, oil on canvas panel

95.00, includes domestic shipping

The Noxubee River in Mississippi is the Indian name for Dancing Rabbit Creek. I painted a slightly different angle a few weeks ago and had a huge response to it, so I decided to paint another as I often do with favorite locations. No two paintings look alike--I would make a terrible forger

After the Rain

8x10, oil on canvas panel
95.00, includes shipping
On my last plein air painting trip is rained for 2 days and was overcast some of the rest of the time--not good conditions for someone who likes to paint light. I took this photo of a puddle by the gravel road just as a bit of sun showed up.

Grazing Horse, Two o'clock

9x12, oil on canvas panel
95.00
This is larger format compared to my other paintings. With a wide frame this painting would work well on a wall over a table, etc. To me, anything under 8x10 should be placed on a small easel and displayed in a bookcase or on a table. Can you tell I have strong opinions?

Pine Trees on the Hill

8x10, oil on canvas pane
95.00, includes shipping
I especially enjoy painting pine trees because of the openness between the limbs, letting the sky show through. I chose to lean toward lavender for the sky to accentuate the misty atmosphere.

Blue Iris

6x8, oil on canvas board
This scene had all the neccessities for plein air painting. 1. good directional light
2. compositional possiblities and 3. a place to park and set up-- That last one is killer hard to find!
