30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge, Day 23

Bird Nest, Day 23
8x8
oil on canvas panel

Daily Paintworks

For years I have bemoaned the fact that I tend to use the same colors over and over.  It's not really a terrible thing to do as it is often one of an artist's signature characteristics, but I always wanted to make myself use other mixtures to give my work a different vibe.  So on this painting the first thing
I did was mix some colors that I liked on my palette.  I thought the sort of acid green would work well with the cooler colors as well as the black and white.  I did, indeed, resort to some of my
sameo-sameo colors but also put some new ones together for a different color scheme.

30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge, Day 13

Bird Nest, Day 13

In addition to collecting bird nests,  I also collect driftwood pieces, smooth pebbles,  rocks, wasp nests, acorns, seed pods, feathers, turtle shells, etc., etc.  Mostly I pick them up when taking walks. These "artifacts" are found in 2 pottery bowls in my house and today I looked for a few new objects to add to my paintings.  The smooth pebble was picked up on the beach in France--hope this wasn't illegal!--and the driftwood on a beach in Florida.

30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge

Bird Nest, Day 9
6x6

Daily Paintworks

As you can imagine, I think about bird nests and related objects quite a bit of the time--making
thumbnail sketches and trying to come up with another way to present the
same subject.
One of my ideas was to paint a gold (as in the real metal) nest, but I am not sure I could do it.
Afterall, I don't have a gold nest to observe.
So---I decided to try a gold egg first.  No, I also don't have a gold egg, but it seemed less daunting
to try to make one up.  Since I know it's supposed to be gold, it looks like gold to me,
I'm not sure it will look like gold to others.

Bird Nest, Day 7

Sorry about the poor photography.  I haven't mastered the skill of taking
photos of wet paintings.  The light color is white although it looks slightly
cream,

I enjoyed adding the yellow-green.  I think it shows well on the black background.

For those of you from Leslie Saeta's challenge, I have enjoyed seeing all the paintings
that have been produced.  Hooray for doing this.  It's not easy, is it?

I finished this one at around 10:30 last night....trying to get a jump on things!  I continue to experiment, which is what this challenge is all about.  I added one more color, lavender and one more object, the feather.

Bird Nest, Day 4

oil on canvas panel, gamvar varnish

Here's a photo of the still life set up.  My son-in-law found the bird nest woven into the branch.  I keep it in a large pot in my living room.

Connie Winters Painting Workshop

Today I began a 5 day painting workshop with Connie Winters who is an awesome painter and a charming, gracious person. I thought you might like to see what happened today. Beginning a 9:00, Connie did a demonstration painting. She begin with a charcoal sketch just for placement and size, no details, wiped off most of the dust so that only a faint outline appeared, and then drew again (redrawing and refining, not just tracing over the charcoal) with yellow ochre. In the above picture she has finished these steps and is now putting on a thin coat of paint, beginning with the darkest values.
The top picture shows the still life set up. Notice that she used two spotlights on the subject to get a strong value contrast.
Will post more on workshop later.
